Stebercraft Forster Blue Marlin Classic 2008

Posted by: flucks on 05/27/2008 01:59 PM (Read: 43)

For many years game boats have passed Forster on their way between Port Stephens and Cairns. Its been more than a coincidence that many have tagged Billfish on these grounds from Seal Rocks to Crowdy Head. Nestled quietly in between Port Stephens, and South West Rocks, Forster and its local Canyons were once only the domain of long liners, and one or two local game boats .Over the last few years more boats have made Forster their home port. Well known local vessels like Athaldo, Reel Trouble, Achilles and Dreamcatcher II , have increased the mystery surrounding Forster, by both competing and winning in many tournaments, but also from their first hand accounts , of a truly awesome marlin and Shark fishery.

Blues About! Great News for all.

Posted by: flucks on 05/11/2008 06:15 PM

On saturday the 10th of May the penultimate weekend, before the start of Stebercraft Blue Marlin Classic. Two of our game boats fished the shelf after recent bad weather just to see what fish are about. Achilles and Rivenge II raised five fish between them four blues and one stripey. Glenn aboard Rivenge II drop a nice blue whilst Ossie on Achilles tagged a nice blue around 100kg. This all leads to a great Stebercraft Blue Marlin Classic looming with plenty of blues out there.

05/05/2006 Weekly Report

Posted by: flucks on 05/07/2006 07:14 AM (Read: 145)
Offshore: Great Lakes Game Fishing Club had an outing last Saturday with mixed results. Athaldo had six encounters with marlin but none stayed hooked up. Rivenge boated a small striped marlin and everyone else had a nice day out. In closer, the full range of pelagic activity continues but maybe a little slower than in recent weeks. Early in the week cobia were still in numbers at The Graveyard. Usually at this time of the year the Ballast Heap is also worth a go. Mahi mahi are still on the FAD. Mac tuna, kingfish, bonito and tailor are common off most headlands and Latitude Rock in particular. Evening fishing has seen the best captures of snapper and assorted reef species. Sharks are everywhere.

28/04/2006 Weekly Report

Posted by: flucks on 04/30/2006 06:45 AM (Read: 122)
Offshore: The ongoing SE wind and swell has seen most craft staying close to home. Some protection from the elements can be sought around Latitude Rock where there is plenty of action and baitfish. Oceanquest Charters are operating in close to our north and are experiencing terrific snapper fishing. The swell should decrease on Sunday, so get out there and see if the cobia are still around. Lots of sharks being reported.

21/04/2006 Weekly Report

Posted by: flucks on 04/24/2006 03:10 PM (Read: 161)
Offshore: While not as much action has been had out wide, in close the cobia are in record numbers. The water must really be hot because over the last few days I've received three Spanish mackerel stories, all of which ended in disaster. We don't usually rig with wire in this part of the world! Snapper and big pearl perch have been caught, particularly to our south. Trag remain everywhere after dark. Most headlands will have tailor and mac tuna cruising past.

06/04/2006 Weekly Report

Posted by: flucks on 04/18/2006 09:46 AM (Read: 129)
Offshore: Last week I commented on the sea surface temp and that a trip out wide could be productive. Two boats did just that last Friday and had a great day on blue marlin. Dreamcatcher had five shots and tagged four fish. Causin Trouble had a double hook-up on two big fish and managed to boat the smaller one which came in at 170kg. Dreamcatcher again fished on Tuesday with seven fish up, two tagged and one bust-off. On the strength of this type of action a fleet of four headed out on Wednesday, Dreamcatcher, Causin Trouble, Blue Mist and Rivenge. All boats encountered big fish with varying degrees of success in staying hooked up. In closer, more cobia have been reported, along with big mac tuna and the biggest schools of Watson’s leaping bonito ever seen by the locals. Tailor are plentiful around most headlands as well as a few just legal kings. An evening fish for jew or trag is worth the effort. A couple of locals are still talking about their encounter with a 15-metre whale shark just off Latitude Rock. Latitude has also been the scene of some quality snapper fishing early morning.
